This morning we had the pleasure of meeting up with Michael Reyes of PAZ Cantina on 12th Avenue and Madison. As Michael and his employees prepared burritos, we walked around handing out hundreds of pairs of socks. Everyone was ecstatic to get brand new socks, especially since some of them had to sleep out in the rain last night. After we were done handing out socks, we helped Michael and his crew hand out freshly made burritos to the hungry people who were waiting patiently in line. We saw some of them wearing the socks we had just given them as mittens on their hands since it was still so cold out.
There were so many happy faces and smiles; amazing, considering what some of these people go through on a daily basis. I think new socks and freshly made food aren’t going to fix their lives, but it will help make it more bearable, and that’s a good thing. I’ve found that by taking the time to just talk to some of these people, looking them in the eye and genuinely listening to what they have to say, it really means a lot. So many of them are on the edge, so many have nothing left, and something as simple as a quick chat and a handshake or a hug, really goes a long way.
If you would like to help, PAZ Cantina is currently offering a free taco to anyone that donates socks. So bring a packaged pair of new socks down to their restaurant and help out! PAZ Cantina is located at 417 E Roosevelt St Phoenix, Arizona.
Thank you to everyone that has donated socks and/or money to our cause, we will be doing this again next week!
